Hide-Tanning

Hide-tanning is the process of transforming animal skins into leather. There are many different methods of tanning used all around the word, each with their own slightly different kind of leather. We offer a few different styles, some basic, some more advanced and difficult.

Braintanning Basics

brain_tanned_rabbit

Learn the basics of brain-tanning by starting small: a rabbit hide. In one day you will brain, soften, and smoke your rabbit skin. This is generally a longer class for hides like Deer. With Rabbits, the size makes it a quick day long introduction into this ancient art. We provide all the necessary materials. Students take home the hide they tan.

Braintanning Buckskin

redsmall

In our DIY leather tanning course we use a traditional method of hide-tanning called “brain-tanning”. Brain-tanning is basically exactly what it sounds like: it is the process of transforming an animal skin into leather using brains. Brains have water soluble oils that help to soften a hard, rawhide skin into a soft, cotton-like texture. This kind of tanning results in the classic “Buckskin” leather that is great for making clothing. Tanning leather using oils and fats has been done by cultures all around the world for thousands of years. In this workshop each student will take their own deer hide through all of the necessary stages of tanning and go home with a completed soft deer hide, ready for your next leather project. This lost art is fun and gratifying but also a lot of hard work. You’ll be getting an upper body work out for sure!
