Sandy River Belle

I don’t usually share some of my more personal stuff here, but what the hell. I’m pretty excited about the banjo, so why not throw this up here to see how I improve over time? This is a tune I learned a month or so ago from my banjo buddy. It’s called Sandy River Belle. If you know the lyrics, please post them!

It’s great that you are learning the banjo. Music is needed to keep our souls nourished just as the skills you teach and experiment with on here (and in your book which just arrived yesterday!) keep our bodies functioning.

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”~Aldous Huxley

Keep up the hard (and incredibly important) work you do.

  2. Gabe Says:

not bad, sir. not bad at all.

  3. Jim Says:

Alright! (From the vid, it first appears fakey ’cause you can’t see much of your hands, and the strings seem invisible!) All I could find on lyrics, below:

    —–

Sandy River Belle, I’m going away to meet you
Sandy River Belle, I’m going away to meet you
Sandy River Belle, I’m going away to meet you
Going away to meet you now

Scout, you amaze me to no end!

    Great banjo plucking!

I found the same lyrics as Jim, so they are now officially confirmed. LOL

Now that you do know what the lyrics are, might you sing along while you play?

This is good! You’re damn good Scout on the Banjo!

    Hugs for you!

BTW: Thanks for the smile :)

  5. Jim Says:

Good thing is: you read the lyrics once, and they’re memorized!

Maybe fill in other stanzas extemporaneously…. Like:

“Crazy Urban Scout, going away to wild you”… etc…

    -Jim

  6. Urban Scout Says:

Lol. Yeah I saw those lyrics. There have to be more verses though.

  7. Zebulon Says:

I enjoyed playin along to that on my Jaw Harp yesterday, good practice for me

  8. lonnie Says:

Great to see that youre still playing. Sounds great. You should come up here sometime and we could play together.
    lonnie

  9. Urban Scout Says:

Hey Zeb, yeah that was great! We’ll have to play together more at the next camp for sure.

Hey Lonnie, Yes I know! I totally want to go up there really bad. I just don’t have the time/money for it. Doh! But I’m sure we’ll play together again soon.

  10. Shusli Says:

Four thumbs up!! Eugene and I are quite impressed!

  11. Georgio Says:

    Yo dude, you’re good.

And why not write your own lyrics? Start with nonverbal vocal sounds that make a related melody and have musical tonal qualities and rhythm. Free-associate and they’ll turn into words; then refine ‘em into lyrics. You’re a darn good writer as it is, you can do this. Make it yours.

    With you in spirit-
    -G.

  12. Dale Coleman Says:

Good stuff Scout. Do you do sky pilot? No really, you sound great. Can’t wait to have around the camp fire.
Going to make it to Buckeye Gathering in northern California next month?
    BB out!

That was fantabulous! I love the banjo – i bet the lyrics really are just the same lamenting line over and over…
when i talk to local mountain folks where i live, they repeat themselves alot to make their point known. :)

    I <3 this video.
