So I re-tanned the first hide (our precious virgin-killing roadkill hide) using eggs again and had better results this time, though many patches still carry a stiffness with them. Penny says I can smoke it and then egg it again, the smoke holding the previous softness in place while the second (I guess third) round of eggs will only soften it more. But I have no patience for that. I mean, I’ll smoke it but I don’t know if I’ll egg it again. Enough places on the second hide feel soft enough to cut off and use with the smaller hide to sew a pair of short shorts, so I’ll probably just do that. [...]

My whole damn life i was surrounded by family(even mom) that could have taught me how to do all this shit, clean, skin, even tan. But naturally i wanted to play video games instead. Better late than never i quess.

seems like things are really coming together, i wonder if that means the end is near? Maybe civ can’t reallyu collpase until you are really ready to carry the survivors into our new future? Probably nothing so mystical is actually happening, but it’s nice to dream.

Yeah, I totally agree that hunting the deer oneself is the next and bigger rite of passage. Bow and arrow? How about a thrusting spear! I guess maybe there are a few hunting rites in their own.

I’m hoping to someday take the rite of passage to the next step and harvest a deer with the bow and arrows I’ve made. I think that would be the ultimate rite of passage and I imagine it was for hunter-gatherers.

I tried 3 or 4 times last fall unsuccessfully but still learned a lot about “the sacred hunt”. Maybe this will be the year.

What an experience you and Penny had in doing something productive with a road kill deer.

Sad is the loss of the deer to civilization, good is that you and Penny were quick to take the deer home and make excellent use of the deer’s sacrifice.

I feel quite happy for you Scout!
Something in me feels the road-kill deer to exist as a rite of passage as well.
A few weeks ago I traveled to the other side of the state I live in,the western slope,as it’s called.I fished for the first time,and ate what I caught.
I felt mild disappointment not going shooting with my family,but that remains another story.
On our (my wife,son,myself,and a car and trunk full of baby gear and backpacks) way back we drove past a road killed deer.Not having a clue as to who in town could help me with it,not having any room in the trunk,and having many cars driving behind us,we left her there.
I know this passage will open again,I just hope next time I have some preparations made.

Awesome! I’m jealous of your experience. My brother had a similar experience on his way to a primitive skills gathering. He had no problem finding a teacher there.
