Hey Andrew! Be careful about the invasive blackberries! they REALLY take over everything, but if they are native varieties, it may be a good idea (I will look into the different varieties)...

I think I will focus more on native edible/medicinal herbs and wild flowers this year around town... perhaps some berry bushes too, in order to attract birds and such! Also, I think these seeds are the ones that are more likely to survive and grow and they are also mostly perennials...

Rewild Camps, Events & Meet-ups / Re: money for knowlege

I agree. With me, although I can't afford the Immersion program right out of pocket, I did get a job specifically for making the money to attend, and once I complete the program, I will have all the skills and knowledge and can then trade/share it with others.

As far as what Urban Scout is talking about with a community surrounding him, that is also a reason why I want to do this program, because the community in Portland is great, and I wanted to get involved with the people when I lived there before but did not have time or energy because I worked! This way I will totally immerse myself in the learning and it will have my full attention and focus, which I learned is a better way for me to learn things, and keep interested in them.

I only wish that I was in Portland for the ReWild camp, but I am in Ohio... so was not able to attend :( I think the Immersion program will be a good atmosphere for me to learn in because it has more structure and is more like a "school" than a week long event... (sometimes it takes me a little while to learn things!) Also, once I complete the program, I will have all those skills to trade/share with other! Anyway, I am still really looking forward to it! I started my job last week, and although I have no social life now, and am super tired all the time (I worked a double shift on friday, ugh...) I know that what I am working for right now is worth it and I only have to work until I leave for the program, so a year of it is not too bad. Also, all my free time in the spring/summer will still be spent on my permaculture/garden project and on foraging and learning other skills... I can't wait!

maybe it has something to do with the vibrations of the music being stimulating to the plants, or something. It's an interesting topic. I notice that plants grown and cared for by myself turn out much better than my last housemates', and I think it is in part because I didn't have a job, spent a lot of time looking at them/caring for them, talking to them, etc. while they all had jobs and spent very little time with the plants... I think things like this definitely have an impact on plants...

I grew up Catholic too, and in a small town (population 1,698).  Like Emily (really, how are Emily and I not alike; I am still trying to figure that out!  :))

I think we will find that there are a lot of people like us! It's good to know that some of them have found there way here! :)

And what was that post by hoodie all about?! hmm...

hmmm, I didn't mean to sound as if I were rich or something when I said "money has no value to me", makes it sound like I have tons to just throw around (trustafarian? HELL NO!). This is the complete opposite of my situation, but because I am planning on completing this program, I got a job (I am for the most part anti-work/job). It's not what I do, or how I would describe myself, if someone asks "what do you do?" (Oh, I am a busser at a fancy french restaurant, haha!) It's just a way that I will be able to complete this program. For a while I have been just selling my artwork and having art shows and such, or making stuff to pay rent and bills, and lucky enough to make $1000 every month or so from that... enough to live off, but not enough to actually "have money." But still, I find no real value in money. It is not something I think of as making me happy. Sure, it may allow me to do and learn things I want (that's just how this society works, with money) but the real value is in the knowledge and experience itself, not the money that is required to do it. Sure I could do the things on my own that this program offers, but I would never ever actually be able to be as experienced or fully understand it on my own, as a lot of the things covered in the program are best learned and experienced in a group. And it would take a much longer time than this program allows. Anyway, just a few of my thoughts on the whole "price" topic... anyone care to contribute?

I was excited about seeing this but realized they ask for the information on your health insurance company and number.  This must be due to liabilities, I'm sure TrackersNW does not want some sort of lawsuit against them.
Also, the cost of the program is $10,000.?

well, it makes sense, if you are doing outdoor activities, there is the chance of someone getting hurt...

Also, this program offers a couple certifications, like Permaculture and Natural Building. Other places charge $1500 for just permaculture certification (you have to have a certification if you plan on including permaculture in your business plans), and it is only 7-14 day long course. This program is 9 months, with many different courses, and also a focus on entrepreneurship (so you can have a start on having your own business when finished), and they have PAID internships during the 9 months to help pay for the last half. Really, it's not that much. And money, you know, it's easy enough to come by (I just have a food service job right now, along with doing my artwork, and it's not going to be a problem for me to meet the payment deadlines)... since it's almost a year away. I guess money really doesn't have much value to me, but the things that this program covers do, and that's worth working for a year to raise the money. I know that I learn better from people and with other people as motivation and inspiration, and because I know TrackersNW and am familiar with their work, I feel confident that it will be an excellent experience and worth every penny. And, again, money has no value to me (maybe because I have none?!) so the price is not an issue... it's good to have something to work towards like this, instead of slaving away to pay off bills or afford your lifestyle or apartment or car payments and gas... I would much rather work to pay for this program than all that crap! And afterwards, I will have a much better groundwork for starting my own business, or contacts to work for something I really believe in. This is all that matters to me.

Grief & Praise / Re: How do you deal with your observations of civ?
« on: November 20, 2007, 08:19:18 AM »
Does anybody else here experience depression or some other psychological stress due to recognizing that civilization traps us in a cage?  I wake up every day and see metaphorical prison bars.  I want to rewild, but without social support, I am reluctant to begin.  I feel trapped between my goals and my immediate needs (i.e. I need to go to work, maintain my friendships, obtain most of my food, all within civilization).

How have others begun to untangle themselves from the web via direct action?

yup. exactly. I have been on here a lot lately and that has helped. I also just applied to the trackersNW immersion program next fall so that has given me something to look forward to... also I just got some awesome foraging books so I have been looking through those and planning on activities for the spring/summer, along with my permaculture/garden project. And I have been wanting to learn how to make a friction fire, weave baskets and rugs, and make clay pots this summer, among other things... So in other words, I have been trying to keep myself busy with "rewilding" thoughts or activities. And it doesn't matter so much that my immediate friend group doesn't share my interests (AT ALL) here in Cincinnati, but I have someone in Portland that does, and I have talked to him about things. And I got all y'all here! I just got a job so that I will be able to afford the trackersNW program and start to pay off my debts so that I won't owe nobody nothing (this will take a while though cus I have college debt too, but the credit card debt should be fairly easy to pay off).

haha! nice!

well. I just got a food service job so i don't think I will be able to do this fast for a while, after I work there for a while and see if I would be able to... one good thing about this job, though, is I get health insurance option after working there two months! the bad things is that it's a job!

hey emily

i have been working off and on trying to create a similar project (P.E.A.C.E. network) . i'd love to talk more and share ideas and resources. there are a few books, coloring books and zines out there for kids. i've included a "radical reading" bibliography (including rewilding, primitive skills, ed/med plant sections among others) in the second issue of my zine that i just finished yesterday actually. they should be copied and ready to mail out in the next week or two.

Hey Primal Parent! Sorry I didn't respond to you sooner. I have been busy with a lot of other stuff and really have not progressed much more on this topic, so I really didn't have anything to add! Let me know about your zine and where I might find it, though, it sounds great! Thanks!
