Visions of the Rewilding Renaissance / News: Forest Boy Germany
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:56:57 AM »
according to BBC:

German police seek help over mystery 'forest boy'
Coniferous forest in Germany's Harz region The boy said he followed his compass northwards until he reached Berlin

Berlin police have appealed for information to help them establish the identity of a teenager who appeared in the city saying that he had been living in the woods for five years.

The teenager is about 17, and speaks English and a little German.

He told the police that he and his father went to live in the woods after his mother died.

He said he left the woods in August when his father died, and walked for two weeks before reaching Berlin.

He said he couldn't remember where his family came from, but that his name was Ray.

"We have sent appeals for help to all European countries via Interpol... we really have no idea where he comes from," Michael Maas, a spokesman for the Berlin police said.

The boy appeared at a youth emergency centre in Berlin on 5 September. He and his father had taken to the woods about five years ago after his mother's death, he told police.

The boy said he and his father did not set up a home, but slept in a tent, and huts they found in the woods.

Police say the boy claims he followed his compass and went northwards after his father died, reaching Berlin.

The boy has been medically examined and is physically healthy.

Police say they have no evidence of a crime having been committed.

Health, Healing & Movement / Lifelong health problems
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:11:13 PM »
 Hey all,

Im currently thinking about finding some help or someone to talk to about recurring health problems i've been running into my whole life. The thing is that im not really comfortable with being dependent on specialists and whatnot and even though i run into problems concerning my physical and mental health im still alive, doing okay-ish (for what its worth), and life goes on.

How have you dealt with these kinda things? Are there people / places to talk to that aren't concerned with fitting me into the system ? people that help you help yourself? that kinda thing

thanks

Media Reviews & Recommendations / End:Civ
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:55:48 AM »
SubMedia.tv has released their full feature documentary End:Civ some days ago. Its free to watch / download and also possible to order a physical copy.

END:CIV examines our culture’s addiction to systematic violence and environmental exploitation, and probes the resulting epidemic of poisoned landscapes and shell-shocked nations. Based in part on Endgame, the best-selling book by Derrick Jensen, END:CIV asks: “If your homeland was invaded by aliens who cut down the forests, poisoned the water and air, and contaminated the food supply, would you resist?”

Rewild Camps, Events & Meet-ups / Skills to Sea
« on: January 14, 2011, 09:12:58 AM »
Hey all! a friend of mine showed me this interesting looking skillshare project in the UK.

http://www.sailboatproject.org/skills-to-sea/

Anyone familiar with the group/people ? ik looks pretty interesting and nicely dovetails with my own ideas about taking rewilding OUT of the forest and into all other types of landscape.  Also the sea is perhaps the only real wilderness close to me. what do you think?

I sent them an email. eager for the reply...

Would you be interested in visiting a project like the above?
what other type wilderness settings would be interesting to explore?

Grief & Praise / How to deal with OTHER's grief?
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:09:31 PM »
I have never felt particularly comfortable with my ability to deal with an other person's grief. Im not sure how to react. I feel i haven't ever learned how to really be there for someone in grief.

Recently in Fenriswolf's thread, in response to the death of his dog, all i knew to say was: "Im sorry" and i feel like it wasnt enough.

Now some of that might be the internet's poor translation of actual silence. which in company can be very meaningful and communicative. But im not sure what is going on here.

what are good ways to support our grieving friends?

One scientist's hobby: recreating the Ice Age
Russian claims his theory to introduce herds of animals to Siberia can slow global warming

CHERSKY, Russia — Wild horses have returned to northern Siberia. So have musk oxen, hairy beasts that once shared this icy land with woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Moose and reindeer are here, and may one day be joined by Canadian bison and deer.
Later, the predators will come — Siberian tigers, wolves and maybe leopards.
Russian scientist Sergey Zimov is reintroducing these animals to the land where they once roamed in millions to demonstrate his theory that filling the vast emptiness of Siberia with grass-eating animals can slow global warming.

Fauna Food / Gutting Rabbit
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:37:17 PM »
My friend found a dead rabbit yesterday. He called me to come over and skin/gut it with me today. He put the dead rabbit in the freezer overnight and let it thaw a couple of hours before we proceeded to gut it.

I have never gutted a rabbit before, but i have butchered deer and fox.

the rabbit was roadkill. it had a broken back, broken hindleg + frontleg and also broken ribcage which had done A LOT of damage to its internal organs.

right upon opening the rabbit up we noticed the smell that came from inside it. It was a much more nasty smell than im familiar with Deer and Fox. Im wondering if this is normal with Rabbit or perhaps it signifies something else?

Anyone familiar with gutting Rabbit? Do they often smell nasty? Could it be the innards pierced by its broken ribcage which got gasses piling up under the skin?
Something else?

Right now we have it in a bucket of salt cold water and we'll cook the meat (2-3hours) tomorrow . Im interested in hearing from people familiar with rabbit skinning/gutting/roadkill

thanks

Media Reviews & Recommendations / Post_apocalypse Hunter Gatherer Comic
« on: September 01, 2010, 10:12:34 PM »
I remember reading a post-apocalypse hunter-gatherer comic somewhere online some years ago. About some tribe of peoples living on the land having to deal with some groups that were committed to restoring the greatness that was civilization.

I think it was mainly a webcomic.

anyone got any ideas?

take care

Hello Rewild.info! i am in need of your collective wisdom!

this friday i will leave for sweden to attend Urvision2010. Excited! nice to see the people i've got to meet there last year!

here's my question:

I really would like to play some campfire games, to have fun late at night around the campfire or perhaps games to play with children (there were many last year!). What games do you know of that i can introduce ?

There will be many international people, many different languages spoken, so last year we came up with some impromptu Language games which were VERY funny! haha they involved interpreting swearing so very educational!

What other games can be fun in a rewild camp setting?

looking forward!

Social Technology / Blogpost on Inuit Mapmaking/Design
« on: August 01, 2010, 11:50:49 AM »
An interesting little blogpost on Inuit Mapmaking /design i wanted to share

http://pencilandpipette.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/thinking-outside-the-square/

Already three hundred years ago they carved three-dimensional maps (see below) – made to be felt rather than seen on dark nights in the kayak. Made out of wood they were both weather proof and would float if accidentally dropped overboard. The actual landmass was often abstracted – it is the edges that contain important information about the shoreline

Visions of the Rewilding Renaissance / Do animals keep pets?
« on: July 28, 2010, 06:04:54 AM »
an interesting article
 http://theprancingpapio.blogspot.com/2010/07/do-animals-keep-pets.html

Herzog points out that while some animals are documented having pets, this behavior almost always happen in captive or semi-captive environment where food and shelter are provided. The author believes that humans are "true" pet owners because the owner-pet relationship occurs in a natural setting and argues that animal pet owners are not "true" pet owners because they do so in captive or semi-captive settings. Thus, Herzog believes that humans are the only animals that keep pets.

Looks like another case of "humans are exempt from the logic we apply to the rest of the living world". What makes Herzog think humans are free ? If anything id say his observations point to the idea that humans are either domesticated and/or captive. At least our interactions seems similar to observed behaviour of other captive/domesticated animals.

« on: March 14, 2009, 08:09:56 AM »
Problem: something to "solve"
Predicament: situation with no "solve" and you have to find a way to deal with.

what do you think?
