Shelter / Urine-Tanning
« on: January 30, 2009, 04:58:37 PM »
Anyone know anything about it or how it's done?  Also, I have heard that urine tanned hides are waterproof, yet don't expand/contract in response to wetness the way rawhide does.  Does anyone know if this is true or not?  Thanks.

Dangers & Risks / Re: Prions....
« on: January 30, 2009, 04:56:48 PM »
Prion Diseases have been found in wildlife (particularly in Colorado and southern Wisconsin).  See wikipedia article on Chronic Wasting Disease: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_wasting_disease.  For an April 2007 map of CWD in US wildlife populations, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chronic_wasting_disease_aug_2006.jpg

Supposedly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did a study which didn't show any correlation between CWD in wildlife and Prion Diseases in humans.  I haven't read the text from this study, but it can be found here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol10no6/03-1082.htm.  Still, I wouldn't feel comfortable eating wild meat from areas where CWD is more common, as wouldn't feel inclined to bet my life on one isolated study.

I just read this alert at the top of the page:

"Alert: This site has taken a lot of time and energy. I need to renew the hosting service as it will expire in March (while I am away). If you want this site to be here the next time you log on to the internet, please donate to my paypal account so I can renew it for several years. I need a couple hundred dollars to really secure the site so I don't have to think about this for a long time."

I don't have a paypal account (and I don't have a credit card either - so I can't really get a paypal account).  I would be willing to chip in some money, though, if there's an address I can send it to.

Misc. / Re: baskets
« on: November 27, 2008, 02:44:44 PM »
anybody out there working on baskets?

I'm hoping to get one started, tonight.  I'm going to experiment with using de-thorned multiflora rose (using the same weaving pattern as a willow basket).  Don't know how it will turn out- I've never made a basket before (but it looks easy enough).

Anyone know how to make them?  Or how to shape the bone into what you want it to be?

Thanks,

Fauna Food / Re: Rabbit Sticks, Boomerangs, etc.
« on: November 26, 2008, 11:47:08 PM »
One thing I've been wondering: what distinguishes a rabbit stick from an ordinary stick (aside from the fact that a rabbit stick is thrown at small animals)?  Is there anything special I would need to do to an ordinary stick to turn it into a rabbit stick (or any way I could improve an ordinary stick to make it a more effective hunting weapon)?

Thanks,

Hello.  My name is Jacob (but most people call me Ghost).  Living on a hippie-commune in Virginia, right now.  It's been a dream of mine to live a simple, self-reliant lifestyle immersed in nature, since I was a kid.  Hoping to leave the farm and head up to the north-wisconsin wilderness, some time this winter (but plans aren't set in stone yet).

Hope everyone is doing well.
